1:1 Scale Print Calibration Setup: Adobe Acrobat & Browser Guide

How to configure printer driver settings to prevent unwanted shrink-to-fit distortions that ruin garment fit.

Why Most Home-Printed Patterns Fail to Fit

Virtually all standard PDF readers (Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge) default to "Fit to Printable Area" or "Shrink Oversized Pages".

Because standard desktop printers have an unprintable margin of roughly 5mm around the edge of each sheet, the software automatically shrinks the entire PDF by 92% to 96% to fit inside the margins. On a size 10 bodice with an 88cm bust, a 94% scale reduction shrinks your bust circumference to 82.7cm—effectively reducing the garment by more than an entire dress size!

The 3 Essential Print Dialog Settings

1. Page Sizing & Handling: Select "Custom Scale: 100%" or "Actual Size" Never leave "Fit", "Shrink to Fit", or "Choose paper source by PDF page size" enabled.
2. Print Page 1 First Only Do not print all 20+ pages immediately. Print only Sheet 1 and measure the calibration test box.
3. Measure with a Rigid Ruler (Metric & Imperial) Verify that the square measures exactly 100.0mm (4.00 inches) horizontally and vertically.

The sloper.fit Calibration Square Standard

Every pattern generated on sloper.fit embeds a standardized, high-contrast calibration square on Sheet 1:

  • Outer Metric Box: 100.0 mm × 100.0 mm
  • Inner Imperial Box: 4.00 inches × 4.00 inches
  • Resolution: 300 DPI vector lines for clean millimeter edge identification
